How Does Double Action Cylinders Work?

Double-acting hollow plunger cylinders feature a central bore through the piston and cylinder body and two hydraulic ports. Using a control valve, hydraulic pressure is directed either to the piston side or the rod side, so that the piston is driven both out and back in under power.

Threaded bars, anchors or bolts can be passed through the central bore. The cylinder then applies force directly to this element – in tension or in compression. The powered return stroke makes the cylinder independent of gravity or return springs and allows high cycle rates.
